A Williamsburg institution, one counter at a time
Reben Luncheonette has held down the corner of Havemeyer Street — steps from the Williamsburg Bridge — for decades, serving Dominican-American breakfast and lunch the old-school way: from the griddle, over the counter, made to order. The neighborhood has changed around it; the luncheonette hasn't had to.
Locals know it by the name of its most famous pour — many just call the place Morir Soñando. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and cold milk, sweet and frothy, poured over ice. Time Out New York put it on its list of the 100 best things to eat and drink in the city, and it's been made the same way here for more than 45 years.
The morir soñando
"To die dreaming." Fresh-squeezed orange juice, milk, and sugar shaken cold — the Dominican creamsicle that made this counter famous well beyond the Southside. It's the reason food writers keep finding their way to Havemeyer Street, and the reason regulars never left.
